Hy-Vee Gas and Fast & Fresh
Hy-Vee, the employee-owned grocer from Iowa, runs fuel stations next to many of its supermarkets and stand-alone Fast & Fresh convenience stores. Free air is common at both.
In Iowa, Hy-Vee competes with Casey's, Kwik Star and Kum & Go for the same corner. Of the four, Kwik Star and Hy-Vee are usually the safest bets for free air.
How to use the air at Hy-Vee
- Find your target pressure on the sticker inside the driver's door, not the maximum on the tire.
- Park so the hose reaches all four tires and unscrew the valve caps.
- On a digital machine, set the PSI first; on a plain hose, check the gauge often.
- Fill in short bursts until the reading matches, then put the caps back on.
Cold weather and your tires
Most Hy-Vee locations on our map are in Iowa, where the average temperature drops from about 74 °F in July to 21 °F in January (NOAA). Tire pressure falls roughly 1 PSI for every 10 °F, so tires set correctly in summer are about 5 PSI low by midwinter. Check them monthly, and always when the low-pressure light comes on.
