Connecticut's free air law

Connecticut was the first state to make air free. Since 1979, gas stations have had to provide free air for tires to anyone during business hours, whether or not they buy gas.

Larger stations, selling at least 10,000 gallons a month, also have to post a sign saying so. If the machine wants coins, ask the cashier to turn it on; under the law it must be free while the station is open.

Complaints go to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.

Winter tire pressure in Connecticut

−4 PSI

typical drop from July to January

The average temperature in Connecticut goes from about 74 °F in July to 29 °F in January. Tire pressure falls roughly 1 PSI for every 10 °F, so a tire set to 35 PSI on a summer afternoon reads about 31 PSI on an average winter morning.

Most tire pressure warning lights switch on when a tire is about 25 % below its recommended pressure. A cold front plus a slow leak gets there fast, so check your tires as soon as the first cold mornings arrive.
