Does Costco have free air?

Our map lists 740 Costco locations with air for tires in 48 states, most of them in California, Texas and Florida.

Short answer

Free for members

Sort of. Many Costco warehouses with a Tire Center have a self-serve nitrogen inflator outside the tire bays that members can use for free. If you bought your tires at Costco, the Tire Center tops them up with nitrogen at no charge. Costco gas stations themselves often have no air.

Nitrogen instead of air

Costco fills tires with nitrogen. You can safely top up air-filled tires with nitrogen and the other way round: normal air is already 78 % nitrogen. Nitrogen leaks a little slower, but it doesn't replace checking your pressure once a month.

The self-serve inflator is usually on the outside wall of the Tire Center. Set the target pressure, press the chuck on the valve and wait for the signal. It only works while the warehouse is open.

How to use the air at Costco

  1. Find the self-serve inflator on the outside wall of the Tire Center.
  2. Set the target pressure from the sticker in your driver's door.
  3. Press the chuck firmly onto the valve and wait for the machine to signal it is done.
  4. Repeat for every tire and put the valve caps back on.

Free by law in California and Connecticut

73 of the Costco locations on our map (10 %) are in California or Connecticut. There, gas stations have to give free air: in California to customers who buy fuel, in Connecticut to anyone while the station is open. If the machine asks for coins, ask the cashier to switch it on.

Cold weather and your tires

Most Costco locations on our map are in California, where the average temperature drops from about 78 °F in July to 46 °F in January (NOAA). Tire pressure falls roughly 1 PSI for every 10 °F, so tires set correctly in summer are about 3 PSI low by midwinter. Check them monthly, and always when the low-pressure light comes on.
