California's free air law

Since January 1, 2000, California's Business and Professions Code section 13651 requires every service station to provide free air, free water and a working tire pressure gauge to customers who buy motor fuel, during the station's operating hours.

Stations must also post a sign that tells drivers about the free air. Many still have coin-operated machines: if you bought fuel, the cashier has to switch the machine on for you at no charge.

If a station refuses, you can file a complaint with your county's weights and measures office. The state can fine a station $250 for each valid complaint. The law only covers customers who buy fuel; whether non-customers get free air is up to the station.

Winter tire pressure in California

−3 PSI

typical drop from July to January

The average temperature in California goes from about 78 °F in July to 46 °F in January. Tire pressure falls roughly 1 PSI for every 10 °F, so a tire set to 35 PSI on a summer afternoon reads about 32 PSI on an average winter morning.

That is not enough to trigger the warning light on its own, but it adds up with the 1 to 2 PSI every tire loses per month. Check your pressure monthly.
