Does Sheetz have free air?

What the Sheetz air station looks like

At many stores the air sits next to the vacuums at the side of the lot. Most are digital inflators: type in the PSI from the sticker in your driver's door, press the chuck onto the valve and let the machine stop on its own. That makes Sheetz one of the easiest places to fix all four tires in a few minutes, even without a gauge.

Sheetz started in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and has spread across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina, and is now expanding into Michigan.

Sheetz or Wawa?

For air it doesn't matter. Both chains give it away for free at almost every store, and where they overlap, in central Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, you can pick whichever is closer.

How to use the air at Sheetz

1. Find your target pressure on the sticker inside the driver's door, not the maximum on the tire.
2. Park so the hose reaches all four tires and unscrew the valve caps.
3. On a digital machine, set the PSI first; on a plain hose, check the gauge often.
4. Fill in short bursts until the reading matches, then put the caps back on.

Cold weather and your tires

Most Sheetz locations on our map are in Pennsylvania, where the average temperature drops from about 72 °F in July to 28 °F in January (NOAA). Tire pressure falls roughly 1 PSI for every 10 °F, so tires set correctly in summer are about 4 PSI low by midwinter. Check them monthly, and always when the low-pressure light comes on.
